This 20-hour training introduces participants to specific tools to facilitate trauma-sensitive movement. We will explore hatha yoga and breath practices, which can be vital to the healing process of complex trauma. The training emphasizes core components of the theory and practice of trauma sensitive yoga, and how they relate to other anti-oppressive and trauma sensitive treatment methods.

This program includes:

  • The latest trauma theories and neurophysiology
  • Theoretical underpinnings and methodology of TCTSY
  • An in-depth look at studies involving TCTSY
  • Opportunities to practice the methods.

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) has become a leading evidence-based adjunct treatment for Complex Trauma (sometimes called chronic, treatment-resistant Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). TCTSY is the only yoga-based practice accepted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) and listed with the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). This unique intervention is based on the robust research that has emerged from The Trauma Center in Boston, MA.

This training is designed for social workers, activists, mental health clinicians, yoga teachers, educators, other health care professionals and anyone looking to deepen their understanding of complex, intersectional trauma. There are no prerequisites to taking this workshop. All are welcome.

Complex trauma dramatically impacts the nervous system. This course is designed to support professionals in broadening their repertoire with trauma sensitive movement and incorporate aspects of the Evidence Based Practice (EBP) of Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) to specifically address the connection between trauma and the nervous system.

This weekend training qualifies as the prerequisite for application to the Center for Trauma and Embodiment’s TCTSY 300-Hour Annual Certification program and is eligible for CEs (18 contact, 2 non-contact) with Yoga Alliance (YA), International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), and various state licensing boards (as requested). Please let us know if you need Continuing Education Credit hours.

Rare opportunity! Join Jo Stone, creator of the BARRE VIDA® who’s here on island this week! In this personalized, alignment focused barre workshop, you will learn tips to protect you from injury in many movement disciplines. Having worked in a lower back rehab center and in a physical therapy context, Jo makes sure you’re set from head to foot to move safely.

Jo will help you avoid many of the alignment issues she sees students struggle with. She’ll show you how proper weight distribution on your feet is used to protect your back and the SI (sacroiliac)  joint. Understanding the real “pelvic tilt”, you’ll learn how to properly work the abdominal muscles.

As she takes you from warmup to cool down of a barre class, she’ll break down the challenging moves, step by step. Get the scoop on barre exercises, such as “the Water Ski”, “the Tilt”,  and “the Pretzel”. Jo teaches you “Distal Arms” so that you work the smaller muscles not just the trapezius.

This is truly the opportunity of the year to get some great customized training in body alignment!

Winalee Zeeb

I began teaching in the fitness industry in 1981. I had a passion for exercise, and teaching aquatics courses, water exercise and aerobics filled that passion. These traditional fitness practices and my unconscious movement patterning ultimately led me to exhaustion, burnout, and physical pain. In 1984, I severely injured both my knees. I had numbed myself to my body’s voice of pain and I required surgery.

In July of 1991, I was on the edge of quitting teaching. I attended the IDEA Fitness Conference and I saw a sign that read, “Body, Mind, Spirit Workout.” I had not seen the word ‘spirit’ used in any other courses offered. Immediately, my curiosity drew me to take the workshop. It was a Nia workshop, and I clearly recall watching Debbie and Carlos enter the room. Every cell of my being recognized their radiance. They took the stage and did something unheard of at that time in the fitness industry – they invited us to take off our shoes. Those first barefoot seconds of conscious movement had my wounded knees saying, “Ahhhhhhh” as they experienced healing through movement. After tearfully dancing a profound healing awakening, I registered for their next White Belt Intensive. I sensed a deep knowing within myself that Nia had much to teach me. I eagerly attended the Blue, Brown, Black, and First Degree Black Belt trainings in succession.

In February of 1997, after years of practicing Nia and many hours of teaching, I was blessed with the honor of becoming a Nia Trainer. Words cannot express the infinite gifts my heart receives from the privilege of sharing the Nia Belts. I travel internationally teaching Nia, and I am passionately in love with what I am privileged to share. I sing professionally. I am a motivational keynote speaker, and a yoga teacher. On February 14, 2009, I opened Heartdance Studio – a magical space. The teachings of Nia have brought me my ability to balance all I am passionate about, and I am so very grateful.

I am honored to joyfully dance in the sea of life with all of you!

Dance with Nia’s Co-Founder, Debbie Rosas. Find the conditioning available in spontaneous movement on the Wild side! Enjoy the soulful music!

Debbie’s choreography is clear and approachable, and her mastery of how to give a good workout to every part of the body is in evidence in this routine.

We’ll tune into our 13 joints (one per week) to key into details of anatomy, the relevant 52 moves, not to mention the 13 White Belt principles (and Blue Belt principles for early birds at 9:00 am.)

In this series, you will:

  • learn how learn a Nia routine
  • practice taking choreographic notes
  • find the sections of the music with 8BC’s
  • match the choreography to your musical map
  • Associate each of the 13 joints with a White Belt principle
  • Deepen your anatomy knowledge around the 13 joints
  • Get the 52 moves into your joints and brain!
  • learn to lead classes through body sensation more than your head
  • give yourself permission to progress in natural time, your body’s way
  • get clarity with your struggles and kudos for your successes in Nia!

Renée teaches you tools to unpack each song of a Nia routine, musically and choreographically. She shares insights from her 15 years of Nia practice and teaching, including life lessons from both of Nia’s founders, Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas.

Here we also go beyond studying movement sequences and explore how Nia practices are meaningful to our daily lives.

We enjoy time for check-in and sharing our individual Nia practices, time for experimenting with our Nia toolbox of skills, time for decoding the music, and time for moving with the music.

You will find in this mentorship program important instructional tips and a huge virtual hug of support and encouragement. Our participants can range from Japan to Canada, from Georgia to Wyoming, and of course Hawaii.

The bonds of fellowship and interconnectedness that you will share with your fellow mentees and mentors are almost palpable. Participants in former mentorships series have evolved into teaching single songs as guest instructors; teaching partial or whole classes as subs; to teaching classes of their own. Others enjoy the personal growth and don’t plan to teach.

Testimonials:

“I’m grateful to Renée and her mentorship program, and the participants from around the world. We dive deep into all aspects of Nia with our mind, body, emotions and spirit. It is healing, supportive, inspirational and truly transformative. I found my Nia teaching wings in this program and I continue to grow each week. Thanks Renée.” – Lorna Moglia, White & Green Belt, California

“The Nia Mentorship Series that I’ve attended online with Still & Moving Center has been such a great opportunity for me to stay “connected” to my Nia practice and Nia community in a way I could not have imagined when I signed up. The experience, love and appreciation of Nia that Renée  and others that have shared in the mentoring of this class and what they bring to the table and the dance floor is incredible!

Learning a new routine with the class, reviewing and diving deeper into the Nia principles and practices has been such a great learning opportunity for me.Through this Mentorship Series experience I continue to learn and grow in my confidence and ability to share Nia as a newer teacher as well as my own personal Nia practice.

I have also improved immensely the ability to put into practice my learnings as I draw from the “well” of Nia and “dance through life” in my own mind, body spirit experiences of each day.” – Mikelle Ivers, Nia White, Green & Blue Belt, Wyoming

“I continue to grow more comfortable in my instructor role. With very few Nia teachers in Alaska, I appreciate my Nia sisters from around the world whom I’ve stayed closely connected with since my White, Green and Blue Belt trainings. Nia keeps bringing me Joy.” – Linda Volkman, Nia White, Green and Blue Belt, Alaska

May’s Bodyweight Personal Training program makes you proficient at using the one thing that you are never without: Your body. The workouts can be done anywhere, anytime, and without costly gym equipment.

Attention all Golden Circle Members and all 14-Day Golden Circle Membership Experience pass holders:

You are eligible to receive a free 15 minute fitness consultation with May. Discuss with May where you are now, and where you want to go in terms of your conditioning and wellbeing. Please make an appointment at the reception desk.

As we go through our daily tasks, we need to lift, turn, bend, squat, move sideways, etc., to accomplish what we want to do. This functional workout replicates daily movement in a safer, stronger, more efficient manner than we normally do.

IMG_3030Bodyweight exercises incorporate many of your body’s muscles at once. These exercises have the added benefit of being much more demanding of core strength (6-pack anyone?) than exercises that require weights and machines. Bodyweight conditioning keeps you safe from many chronic injuries, such as joint problems, that may arise over time with weightlifting and other unnatural exercises with little functional value to our daily lives.

With Bodyweight Personal Training, you will develop greater strength, power, muscular and cardiovascular endurance, speed, balance, coordination, and flexibility. With consistency, combined with a good diet, this progressive program will reward you with continuous results, increased body control, and new levels of achievement.

    • A full side-lying sequence of postures that will add another 1-hour to your list of postures, covering the entire back body from shoulders and neck to the feet,
  • The effective use of props in the side-lying position: “Make your props do the work for you”.
