What do you get when you combine intricate footwork, extensive hand gestures, and emotive facial expressions? Bharata Natyam, one of the oldest and most popular classical dance forms of India! In this 4-week series, you will have the opportunity to learn rhythmic foot patterns and how to tell a story using hand and facial expressions. These classes will emphasize technique and form, while also explaining the meaning and context of the movements. This is an series aimed at dancers with prior bharata natyam experience. (Suggested attire: A long tunic top, stretchy pants or leggings, and a thin, long scarf you don”t mind getting sweaty are recommended.)

Runjini Murthy began her formal study of Bharata Natyam at the age of seven.  For 12 years, she studied with her guru Smt. Jothi Raghavan, renowned teacher and founder of the Nrityanjali School in Boston, MA. Runjini had her arangetram (i.e. solo dance recital) at the age of 14, and has performed in several professional Nrityanjali productions including Siva Leela, Alankaram (a collaboration with the Battery Dance Company of New York), and Arpana. Over the years, she has had the good fortune of working with many esteemed visiting choreographers, dancers, and musicians from India. While classically trained in Bharata Natyam, Runjini also loves Bollywood and hip-hop, and appreciates dance from all over the world.
