This sampler workshop will introduce you to a movement practice that prioritizes healing and empowerment for survivors of trauma. Jody will offer the full 20-hour Trauma Sensitive Yoga training July 31, Aug 1-2, 2020.

Experiencing physical and psychological trauma often causes people to respond to events from their past and disconnect from their bodies. This disconnect in turn causes a further sense of loss, a loss of selfhood. Inviting a person to move their body in a way that feels safe and non-invasive can allow them to experience embodiment once again, to reconnect with themselves.

The Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts developed this particular method, and called it Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY). TCTSY is an empirically validated, clinical intervention for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD. The TCTSY method is based on central components of hatha yoga and offers participants a path back to being present.

The practice modifies elements of standard hatha yoga to maximize experiences of empowerment and to cultivate a more positive relationship to one’s body. Unlike many yoga classes, TCTSY uses no physical hands-on adjustments to influence a participant’s physical form. Rather, TCTSY presents opportunities for participants to be in charge of themselves based on a felt sense of their own body. Facilitators invite participants to notice sensation and make authentic choices in their bodies as a way to cultivate agency.

Attend this sampler to experience the practice and learn more about current methods that foster recovery from trauma and boost resilience.

Frequently Asked Questions on 20 Hour TCTSY Foundations Training

From Eva Geueke

When the heart is restless or you’re feeling anxious, gently hold your little finger with your other hand for about 10 minutes. It works to calm the heart.

This hand posture comes from the Jin Shin Jyutsu tradition, a healing art form from Japan said to have been rediscovered in the 20th century. The acupressure points on your pinky correspond with the heart and small intestines. Healing energy is especially strong in your fingertips and the middle of your hand.

Our human emotions run through the heart: whether anger, hatred and fear, or joy, love and compassion. Our hands act as extensions of our hearts, capable of being cruel and destructive, or giving and caring. Our loving hands reach out from our loving hearts, capable of healing and bringing the energy system back into harmony.

Politicians sometimes instinctively (or knowingly) put their fingers together, or hold one wrist with the opposite hand while they are in a crowd shaking hands,  to prevent an energy drain.

In moments of stress, the simple resource of holding our little finger is very easy to do. You might also pay attention to how your hands naturally grasp and gesture throughout your day. These positions are often instinctive to our body’s energy system, and you may discover that you are already innately using hand postures to release stress and bring a sense of renewed calm.

Without consciously knowing particular points on the body needed to release an energy lock, a mother intuitively touches her baby where it needs help, and her love for the child comes straight through her hands with healing benefits.

To support our instinct to position our hands and bodies in ways that clear blocked energy,  Eva teaches Morning Qigong every Tuesday at 8:30 am, HST.

Mondays 11:00 am – 12:00 pm (HST) / 1:00 – 2:00 pm (PST)

The results of practicing the ELDOA Method are a sense of ease in your body, especially in your back, improved posture, and an overall sense of well-being. This practice promotes independence. You will learn how to relieve, heal and strengthen your own spine!

A French Osteopath named Guy Voyer created ELDOA to eradicate back pain. Using the body’s fascial chains and the principle of tensegrity, the postures of ELDOA set up specific lines of traction to open up spaces in our spinal column as well as shoulders, hips and ribs. Marla blends this powerful practice with yogic breathing and gentle stretches.

Many of Marla’s Eldoa students feel relief from pain after other approaches have failed them. They leave class feeling relaxed, empowered and taller. They understand her clear instruction with images that help them to remember the movements. Students sleep better, move more easily, and improve their posture!

What Marla’s students are saying:

“Marla has an incredible understanding of the body as well as the generosity and intelligence to communicate her knowledge in a way that can be shared with others.”

-Lesley Telford

“Marla is a great instructor and an amazing, kind person. I attend both her yoga and Eldoa classes. I particularly like the unique stretches and posture focus Marla has for my computer neck!”

-Jeff Appelbe

“As a chiropractor, with a broken lumbar vertebra, I’m very picky about who I let treat my body or provide me with exercises. When I heard about Marla’s ELDOA in Vancouver, I had to check it out. Apparently, Tiger Woods has used this technique to help him with his spine, so it had to be valuable, right? Right. Marla is very professional, knows her functional anatomy, and is an excellent teacher. Even with my 20 years in practice, she taught this old dog some new tricks! I have already recommended a few clients to her classes, and they are getting a lot of benefits too. Great complement to chiropractic care.”

-Christian Guenette

The full hour dedicated to ELDOA postures and stretching enhances the many possible benefits including:

  • Normalize Disc Bulges
  • Reduced Degrees of Scoliosis
  • Increased Flexibility
  • Improved Muscle Performance and Tone
  • Normalization of Visceral Function
  • Reduced Stress
  • Injury Recovery and Prevention
  • Reduced Joint Inflammation and Arthrosis
  • Delayed Disc Degeneration
  • Increased Disc Hydration
  • Increased Blood Flow
  • Improved Posture
  • Relief of Chronic and Acute Back Pain
  • Relief of Neck and Shoulder Tension
  • Improved Awareness and Overall Wellbeing
  • Improved Recovery Time for Sports and Training
  • Reduced Forward Head Posture

Eriko Jones

Eriko serves as Still & Moving Center’s official Japanese/English translator of our website and as our contact person for all Japanese guests. She has traveled with and translated for our kumu hula (hula master) Malia Helela for since 2010. We prize Eriko’s warm graciousness as well as her excellent language skills.

Born in Tokyo and raised in Yokohama, Eriko moved to the USA in 1993 to attend college in San Diego, graduated from UCSD with B.S. Biology, and made her dream come true as a dolphin trainer! She also spent two years at a school in Los Angeles training to be an interpreter. With her American husband, their bilingual little boy, and many American and Japanese friends, she’s constantly working in both languages!

Eriko’s English/Japanese translation work, both written and spoken, has taken place in many settings: classes, workshops, in courts and law offices, hospitals, trade shows and business meetings. She does event planning and coordination, as well as marketing – mediating between the Japanese and English-speaking cultures.

Eriko is no ordinary translator. She goes into the ocean at sunrise for Hawaiian hiuwai ceremonies and hikes up mountains to interpret for hula dancers.  She has spontaneously modeled clothing for our boutique and played a role of magician/deer in a performance. She even emceed for a hula performance at Ala Moana Center Stage one time!

As one of those rare individuals who has trained dolphins, Eriko evidently speaks a third language: Dolphin!

Based on the classical Pilates vocabulary, Sha-lates (Sharon’s Pilates) blends each training with her movement experience as a dancer, to benefit the client. Rhythm and humour play a HUGE role. Each lesson begins with a standing warm up, incorporating the breath and bringing a vertical energy into the centre of the body. Moving onto the floor in various exercises, Sharon helps to initiate movement from the core, lengthen and strengthen each part of the body and enjoy the feeling of full muscular engagement.

When asked to describe the feeling students have as they leave her class, Sharon answered,  “A good vibe that carries them through the day and a little burn in the butts and guts to remind them of me the day after : ) “
