In the course of this workshop, you learn with these easy and gentle movements to take your health into your own hands. Instead of being adjusted or treated again and again you can now learn what it is that causes you discomfort, tension or effort, then you learn how to avoid it. You learn to replace unconscious movement patterns with healthy once that will make life easier and smoother. If you have a twist in your spine (scoliosis) this workshop can be very helpful in teaching you how to lengthen your spine in the right direction. In any case, most neck, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae will benefit. You will feel more mobile yet stable. You may be able to avoid headaches as well.

In this workshop we use the sophisticated movement sequences of the Feldenkrais® Method and Eva’s Smart Moves to regain range of motion, undo tension and pain. This workshop helps your spine to remain healthy and/or helps it to heal.

What others say about the Feldenkrais Method:

“I suffered a back injury on top of scoliosis for 8 years until a Feldenkrais practitioner asked me, ‘Do you know that you don’t need to be  in that pain?’ And, thanks to Feldenkrais, she was right.” – Renee Tillotson, Director, Still & Moving Center

“…. It has allowed me to play pain free golf, without worrying about injury.” – Duffy Waldorf, PGA Tour Golfer

..It has had an enormous effect on the way I run and on the way I live my life. My knee problem vanished. I’ve increased my mileage considerably without a trace of difficulty. And I’m running faster.” – Bruce Holmes, Runner’s World

“Feldenkrais has given me the power to take responsibility for any habits that don’t serve me, and the skills to transcend them.” – David Fein

“ …it has taught me how to shift a moment of pain into a lifetime of curiosity.” – Buffy Owens

“Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.” – Moshe Feldenkrais

Learn to walk with ease, realign your posture and increase your overall health. Good posture comes not from muscular effort but from the optimal use of the skeleton. Good posture makes you look and feel healthy, poised and potent. The Maasai tribe in Africa is known for its elegant, long, erect posture. They can walk for many miles without tiring, keeping their ease and bounce. The beauty of their posture is the ease, without shoulders taken back or tummies tucked in. Their uprightness comes from a clear inner skeletal alignment where muscles are free to move without holding unnecessary tension. We will learn this practice with the Feldenkrais®/Smart Moves techniques.

Posture often is misunderstood and is artificially forced and unbalanced. People do the best they know how, but have often a wrong notion. The resulting poor posture can adversely affect eyesight, thinking, mood, bones, joints and ligaments and the optimal functioning of organs. A healthy, functioning spine promotes whole body wellness, with accompanying benefits to our emotional wellbeing and our ability to think clearly.

This workshop is appropriate for all ages. The Feldenkrais movements will be done lying down, sitting and walking, always adapted to individual abilities. Fit people without injuries will learn to be more efficient, while others will learn to enhance their health and overcome their injuries, as Dr Feldenkrais did himself.

The Feldenkrais Method® is a very advanced approach to body-mind integration and healing. We learn to re-pattern our movement as we develop awareness of how our brain and body co-function while moving. Feldenkrais Method® and Eva’s Smart Moves share many of the same principles and techniques with qigong. These movements are simple and gentle and can be repeated at home once you learn them.

The diaphragm is not just for breathing and eyes are not only important for seeing! Through easy and gentle movements as prescribed in the Feldenkrais Method, we can learn to recognize and eliminate many of the common habits that interfere with easy, effortless vision, deep breathing and good spinal organization. This workshop will focus on the diaphragm/lungs, neck, 7th cervical and eyes.

The diaphragm moves, day in and day out, to move our lungs but it also has intimate relationship with the heart and the neck. The 7th cervical is a key vertebrae with many nerves going down the arms and the spine. Dr. Feldenkrais once said: “We would not have neck problems if our lungs would glide freely.”
The diaphragm is a large muscle in the center of our body that is badly understood and neglected. When it does not move well, the diaphragm not only hampers oxygen intake but also pulls on the chest and neck. The 7th cervical vertebrae needs to be able to communicate with the diaphragm for a free neck!

The movement of our eyes organizes the movements of our body, our vision impacts and interacts with every movement we make throughout our whole body, as well as how we feel and think. Vision is the primary sense through which we experience the world.  We can also learn new skills that transform the use of our eyes, helping us to see more clearly. As our thoughts move busily here and there, our eyes respond and move busily here and there. When our neck and posture is tight and tense, our eyes will be tight and tense. When our breathing is held or frozen, our eyes will be held and fixed and our neck tense.
This workshop will help you to reclaim your healthy spinal movement, breathing and use of your eyes.

Less is More: The Feldenkrais Method® and Smart Moves

Whenever we act or exercise with unnecessary effort and force, our neuromuscular system organizes defensively to protect us from potential danger and damage. In this way, over the course of our lives, we build up conflicting patterns of anxiety and strain throughout our body/mind and the muscles of our eyes, patterns that become habitual and unconscious. Try as we might, we cannot release this strain by force of will. We know for ourselves that with habits we want to change, the more we try to resist or change the habit, the less effective we feel and the stronger the habit becomes. We don’t know why, but somehow we feel tangled up in knots.

Through guided Smart Moves and Feldenkrais lessons, we learn that the secret to success is that the less effort we exert, the greater the change and improvement. As we become more discriminating and sensitive to our internal sensations, we can feel the knots as tangible resistance to effortless movement. We can then knowingly, and with great precision, chose to release otherwise inaccessible strain and tension. We learn how to untangle the tangle!

If you are already having troubles with knees or hips, plantar fasciitis, heavy legs or arthritis, this workshop can give you great help and insight. If you just want to have more flexibility and spring in your movement, you’re coming to the right event. Your body will love you for it!
Give your feet and joints a lot of TLC in this workshop. Learn ways to move smarter and feel better. Hips, knees and feet all have to connect well to enhance each other and to locomote us from one place to another. They also need flexibility on their own. When feet and knees need to connect with the pelvis and trunk, we achieve well coordinated movement, and we can prevent or repair injuries.
The Feldenkrais Method® is a very advanced approach of body-mind integration and healing. We learn to re-pattern our movement as we develop awareness of how our brain and body co-function while moving. This workshop will give you practical knowledge and skills to start solving surprisingly interconnected problems, such as jaw tightness and sciatica, or eye strain and headaches. Through the gentle, slow moving Feldenkrais® Method you begin to rebalance, realign and heal the source of all these issues: faulty habits that lodge in the spine. Loosening the neck has a rippling effect all the way down our back.

Picture your spine’s vertebrae starting behind and below your eyes, running down behind your jaw, through your neck, down your trunk, connecting to your legs through your pelvis, with its ileo sacral joints. Now imagine the whole spinal system well-aligned and working together smoothly.

When our neck and posture is tight and tense, our eyes will be tight and tense. When our jaw is tight, our eyes and neck are tight. But when the jaw releases our vision clears, our neck improves, and the ileo-sacral joint releases, no longer impinging upon our sciatic nerve.

This short workshop is a wonderful introduction to releasing tension with almost effortless movements that are done lying down or in a chair.  People find regular Feldenkrais classes helpful to continue the progress they make in workshops.

People experiencing acute sciatica at this time should probably do a one-on-one Feldenkrais session before attending this workshop.

The Feldenkrais® Method is a wonderful and potent method that almost anyone can do. It only requires a curiosity about our own movement habits. Some of those habits are causing limitations, pain, inflammation and over-exertion. We’ve learned certain unhealthy habitual movements and postures so long ago that we may no longer recognize them or know that we can actually change our old patterns. With the Feldenkrais Method we can recognize those hindering habits and find better ways of moving that are healthy, strengthening and pain free. This does not only happen on the physical plane but also ripples out into the rest of one’s life.

Elvis had something valuable to teach us! Learn how the pelvis, attached to the biggest muscle in your body,  becomes your powerhouse for efficient movement and helps your posture. Start by developing awareness of your pelvis and sacrum. Discover how to avoid pinched nerves, making space for the nerves connected with your sacroiliac joint.

At the base of your spine, the sacrum is one of the most fascinating bones in the body. Consisting of five fused vertebrae at the back of the pelvis, the sacrum is the lower pole of the cerebrospinal system, with the brain as the control center at the top. The sacrum is the originating point for the physical energy ascending and descending through the spine.

When we add conscious awareness to the energy charge concentrated in the pelvis, it’s like properly holding the reins of a powerful horse. Our pelvis swings freely, and all of our motor movements can be integrated and at ease. If we have trained ourselves to hold the reins too tightly, we restrict our power and range of motion. We may feel weak, lack stamina, or suffer back pain.

Once we allow our pelvis to really move and  integrate with our full body motor system, WE are in charge!  We can improve our power and our posture, reduce pain and stiffness, and enjoy a feeling of aliveness.

Many of our basic life functions require a healthy pelvic floor: digestion, elimination, reproduction and breathing. If you want to improve the function of the pelvic floor, you have to learn how to contract and relax all of it, in a balanced and more equal manner. This is what makes your pelvic floor healthier and stronger, using all parts, coordinated with your whole body. This workshop will help you to discover how to sense and contract the pelvic floor in all directions combined with easy movements of the whole body.

Improvement starts with awareness. The movement of the pelvic floor is subtle, and yet it is possible for everyone to feel its effect. Once you can sense the pelvic floor muscles working, you can learn greater control both in relaxing and contracting. Getting – or getting back – such control can be a precious thing at any point in life, and especially as we age! Thank you Elvis for showing us the importance of the pelvis!

Sciatica pain is caused by the sacrum not being in the correct position, pinching the nerves. The sacrum sliding out of place often stems from an imbalance in the spine and overly tight pelvic muscles. Learning to move the pelvic floor, we can rebalance the sacrum and the entire spine, often easing pain.

Surprise, surprise! Moving the diaphragm and the ribcage well can undo neck tension, scoliosis and immobility in the spine! There are a million benefits to proper breathing, including mental health! Good breathing changes everything, as our oxygen is our primary source of energy, our lifeline, even before water and food.

In this workshop you get to know your biggest muscle, the diaphragm, your ‘motor’ in the center of your body so well that you can move it with ease. The diaphragm and the musculature between the ribs will learn to work together. This will free up and soften your ribcage as your spine elongates. Your thoracic spine will benefit as well as your neck!
