Experience a uniquely Hawaiian perspective to visiting sacred places with Malia Helelā, our kumu hula (traditionally trained hula teacher), talking us through our visit.
We’ll start our Walk Story at Makapu’u Point on the Eastern tip of O’ahu, feeling the warmth of our life-giving sun, watching for early arriving whales. After our relaxed morning hike and cultural talk, we’ll caravan to Ulupo Heiau, an ancient place of worship in Kailua. Bring your own water picnic lunch to enjoy under the shade of trees at Ulupo. The group will provide input for a simple Hawaiian chant that Kumu Malia will craft and teach to everyone.

Ulupo Heiau is one of the oldest structures on O’ahu, constructed of stones passed hand to hand from miles away. Freshwater springs still flow, irrigating lo’i kalo (taro patches) and highlighting the importance of this spiritual center as a source of water, rich resources and mana (energy).

Kumu Malia was a child when her family participated in the restoration of Ulupo Heiau in the 80’s. She continues to malama ‘aina (tend the land) with her young children, supporting her husband’s efforts to grow taro in the traditional Hawaiian way.
