Nose Flute Making & Rare Hula

Nose Flute Making: Make your very own `ohe hano ihu! Hawaiian bamboo nose flutes are made from a single bamboo section and drilled with one hole for breath, and two or three fingering holes for melody. Participants will learn the proper placement for drilling and finish the flutes by sanding.

Nose Flute Hula Class: The Hula Preservation Society presents a rare form of implement hula: Hula ‘Ohe (Nose Flute Hula). Participants will learn to use the `ohe hano ihu (nose flute) in a chant interwoven with dance.

Uncle Calvin Hoe: As a widely respected master craftsman of hula implements, “Uncle Cal” has been involved in the renaissance of Hawaiian music, hula, and the arts for the past five decades. Tens of thousands of students have been introduced to the `ohe hano ihu through his teachings. In 2009, he began a partnership with Hula Preservation Society to present workshops on select rare forms of implement hula, such as the Hula `Ohe, or Nose Flute Hula.
