Though the phrase ‘Silk Road’ has a more mythical than historical reference, it connotes some of the mystery, allure and deep nuance in the dances from this part of the world, stretching from India through all the “Stans” (Afghanistan, Tajikistan, East Turkestan, Uzbekistan) through Persia and beyond. As a Fulbright Scholar in Dance with decades of personal experience dancing in these countries, Tara brings you the authentic flavors of dance from each of these regions, while mixing in the spice of her own signature approach.

Tara draws you along on her fascinating dance journey through the lands of Central Asia in this continually evolving class. Enjoy learning unusual footwork, hand and head gestures that you may never otherwise be exposed to. No matter what other dance styles you may be acquainted with, Tara’s masterful expressivity and precision will seep into and uplift your body and soul.

This class rotates week by week on a 4 spoke cycle, focusing on:

  • Musical receptivity & creativity for dancers: interpretation of odd & even rhythm patterns
  • Personal expression & commanding space: staccato stops, isolation, body alignment for dance
  • Strength & rooted movement: nuanced foot & hand execution
  • Fluidity & float: spirals with the spine & dynamic spin sequences.

For months with 5 Wednesdays, you’ll get a Silk Road surprise focus for the last week!

Tara Pandeya

The daughter of a dancer, Tara Pandeya has gained world recognition as a dance performer, teacher and choreographer, as well as a scholar and cultural activist dedicated to the promotion of dance forms from Central Asia. Tara worked as a principal dancer with Cirque du Soleil and is the first westerner to perform with Lola, the National Ensemble of Tajikistan. Tara has performed & created dance programming in over 35 countries.

She balances her work as a practitioner with theoretical work, conducting dance research through the Rockefeller Foundation & CECArtslink in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, East Turkestan, Pakistan, India and Russia. Most recently, she has created original dance works for UNESCO, the Bauhaus Festival & at Royal Albert Hall. Tara holds an MA in Dance Anthropology from London’s Roehampton University and is a 2019-20 Fulbright Scholar. Her solo work has been featured on BBC, in the New York Times and in Dance Magazine.

Dancing with Tara, you will also gain an understanding of folklore and cultural traditions through dance gestures, aesthetic theories, musicality and intention. Along with gaining exposure to traditional dance practices through a system of ‘kinetic orality’, you will also learn to analyze your own movement patterns and ways of moving in your unique anatomy.

Aloha Dancers, Nia movers and Groovers! I want to share an awesome opportunity to be a part of a unique, once in a lifetime event! Read on, and if you’re intrigued, please contact me by Tuesday, March 31st!

International Lions Convention will be held in Honolulu this June. Saturday, June 27th. The festivities will include, but not be limited to parties, events, soirees, meetings and a massive parade on June 27th to march down Kalakaua Avenue. 25-30,000 attendees from around the world are expected!

I have been contacted through event planner Mira Savara, to put together 4 dance teams of 10, each to represent a different region of India – reflected in dance, song and costumes, for the parade, Saturday June 27th, 9am – noon, and later that same night, the same dance at the Ballroom.

I will personally put together the simple choreographies.

Each participant will:

  • learn and practice a dance with me and the team
  • dance in the parade
  • wear a custom costume from India
  • be granted a small stipend for performing

We’ll also have a green room, food, water and possibly validation for parking (working on it!)

I’d love to have 10 (or more) dancers and Nia movers from Still & Moving Center join our great team! The collective love of music, dance and movement, paired with positive energy, is a perfect fit! You’ll be joining my Still & Moving Center Bollywood and Punahou dancers to create our complete team!

Rehearsals will start mid-April, and we’ll have the option to video the dance so self-practice can be employed. I definitely need a COMMITMENT and need to MEASURE the dancers so the outfits can be made in India by deadline!

Please spread the word and get back to me by March 31st. Then, we can plan a sample class and get measurements etc. Its’s: willowchang@hotmail.com

This will be a rare opportunity for anyone to see and hear drum masters of Indian tabla and Japanese taiko together in performance. TARANG has traveled extensively in India and abroad Conceived by Abhijit Banerjee, one of the top ranking tabla players of India, TARANG is neo-traditional Indian music wrapped in a Western form with taiko drums! Renowned taiko artist of Oahu, Kenny Endo is at the vanguard of the contemporary usage of traditional taiko drums. Endo has performed the world over in both traditional, classical, and contemporary styles of taiko. Although Endo’s home base is on Oahu and Abhijit Banerjee’s base is in India, the two manage to perform together often on the global stage – but seldom in Honolulu!  Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear some world class music! Donations Appreciated. Reserving your spot online in advance highly recommended.
