Freedom for Neck and Shoulders

Friday, Jan 23

6:45 pm – 9:00 pm

FeldenkraisIn this workshop, you learn movement lessons that will help you to free your neck. Get rid of pain and benefit your shoulders, entire posture and self. The neck is like a bottleneck between our brain and our torso. Unfortunately that is where we carry around lots of tension and injuries making that narrow place even narrower. That results in many unpleasant, painful and even dangerous conditions. If we can soften and heal there we may have a whole different outlook on our life. These Feldenkrais movements are easy to do and good for all age groups (from 9 to 99) and most medical conditions. $35 for 2.15 hrs

Learn how proper breathing, health and the length of your spine are interconnected. This  Feldenkrais / Lying Down Qigong session helps  to free the neck and elongate the thoracic spine. Your breath becomes deeper and more efficient! Most people have limited knowledge about one of the most important functions in our body: breathing. Proper breathing keeps the spine long and loose and the lungs healthy. To be able to breath optimally depends on the flexibility and functionality of our diaphragm and its play with the spine and intercostal muscles. When we breathe freely, not only do we gain energy, improve our general well-being and burn calories better, we also keep our spine supple and our neck free!

In this workshop series, both systems of mindful movement will greatly enhance each other: The Feldenkrais® Method works with the human structure, the system and the bones in particular to enhance our functioning on all levels, and Qigong works with electromagnetic energy, meridians and organs. Both techniques are potent in their gentleness, practicing mindfulness for health and wellbeing. Yang Yang, a Taoist master of Qigong, has found so much similarity in the two practices that he has called The Feldenkrais® Method “lying down qigong.”

August 2: Strong Healthy Heart and Lungs – Flexible chest and upright thoracic spine

In Chinese medicine the heart is related to summer: happiness, joy, love, honor and compassion. The heart is the Emperor or Empress in the body, the one that regulates with its rhythm hundreds of functions in the body. The heart and the lungs have an intimate relationship. The lungs hug and massage the heart. Our breath in and out changes the shape of the pericardium. Yet the lungs can only be filled by our motor in the middle of the body, the diaphragm and the intercostal musculature. In the Feldenkrais® portion of the workshop, you will gently yet profoundly enhances the functioning of your whole breathing apparatus, diaphragm and chest. When our breath functions effectively, it not only massages the heart and moves the intestines, but will also help to elongate the spine! In the qigong part of the workshop, you will learn movements for the optimal working of the lungs and heart. We will practice the healing sound and meditation for the heart and lungs.

August 9 – Goodbye Backache, Hello Happy Healthy Kidneys – How to get rid of backache and enhance & cultivate your constitutional energy

Positive Kidney Energy stands for trust and alertness. Our inner strength comes from our kidneys and can get depleted by an exhausting lifestyle. In Eva Geueke’s observation with hundreds of clients poor posture compromises the kidneys. Your kidneys need space to move! Backache often stems from weakness or contraction in the part of the back that is the kidney area. In this workshop, the Feldenkrais® Method will help us create space around the kidneys, learn about better posture and better grounding! We will include the pelvic floor as it holds the bladder as part of the kidney system, strengthening your mid-back and improving your posture. This may also help to reduce Ringing of the Ear syndrome. In the qigong part of the workshop, you will learn how to enhance your kidney energy with sound and meditation!

August 16 – Joyous heart and Courageous Lungs – Deep breath and healthy vertebrae

Dr Feldenkrais once said that ‘if the lungs move smoothly and do not stick you will have no neck trouble!’ We can enhance joy and courage with these easy-to-do Qigong meditations and Feldenkrais® moves, as well as the health of your entire spine! In Chinese medicine the heart is related to summer: happiness, joy, love, honor and compassion. The lungs hug and massage the heart. Our breath changes the shape of the pericardium. Yet the lungs can only be filled by our motor in the middle of the body, the diaphragm and the intercostal musculature. The Feldenkrais® Method gently yet powerfully enhances the function of your whole breathing apparatus, diaphragm and chest. Effective breathing not only massages the heart and moves the intestines, but also helps to elongate the spine! The intestines are also part of the lung and heart system in Chinese medicine! In the Qigong practice, you will learn movement for the lungs and heart. We will practice the healing sound and meditation for the heart and lungs. Dr Feldenkrais once said that ‘if the lungs move smoothly and do not stick you will have no neck trouble!’

August 23 – The Brain in the Belly – Your Strong Creative Center – Harmonious Stomach, Spleen and the Front/Back Balance

In all Qigong forms, the area just below the belly button (called the lower dan tien or hara) is an important center in the human body. Its translation means ‘field of qi’. In Hawaiian, the word for this center, na’auao, also means Instinct, Intuition and a well-balanced person. The Qigong master Mantak Chia conducted experiments in which he was hooked up to electrodes and asked questions. He showed that he was able to answer from the lower dan tien instead of the brain. The brain, he says, should not be overused (agitation, dementia and stroke). Instead we need to learn to use our brain in our belly! In this workshop you will learn qigong movements and meditations that strengthen and awaken the lower dan tien. We harmonize stomach and spleen that are in the vicinity of the lower dan tien, so we can ‘ stomach life’ well, have a strong immune system and use it’s instinctual wisdom. In our movement and life, everything needs to be connected to the center to be efficient. The strength of our center requires the proper distribution of muscle tonus between the extensors and the flexors in the front and the back and the harmonious cooperation of all the flexors. The Feldenkrais® Method will help us to find this front-back muscular balance and a stable center. Qigong helps with the inner organ balance and wisdom.

with Eva Geueke

Feldenkrais Healthy Spine SeriesSaturdays, March 15 – April 26

The pelvic floor is involved in many basic life functions as varied as digestion, elimination, reproduction and breathing. Improvement starts with awareness. The movement of the pelvic floor is subtle, and yet it is possible for all of us to feel its effect. Once you can feel the pelvic floor muscles working, you can learn greater control both in relaxing and contracting. If you want to improve the function of the pelvic floor, you have to learn how to contract and relax all of it, in a balanced and more equal manner. This is what makes your pelvic floor healthier and stronger, using all parts coordinated with your whole body. Discover how to sense and contract the pelvic floor in all directions combined with easy movements with the whole body. From the pelvic floor, we will move on to address the pelvis itself, plus the lumbar spine.
