Heart, Vagus Nerve, Face & Gut Connection
On Sunday we continue strengthening the heart while freeing the neck, the face, jaw and tongue. With Feldenkrais/SmartMoves lessons we may take years off our faces, make our smile more radiant and our mouth more spacious. Many invisible benefits will become apparent from within.
As highly evolved beings, we possess a very adaptive vagus nerve that connects the brain and its busy activities with our gut. How does it do that? Through the heart! As the longest nerve in our body, the vagus nerve integrates the thoughts of the mind – as they play upon our facial expressions and in our voice – with that “gut feeling” by GOING THROUGH THE HEART! We find that a strong heart center integrates the ideas and sociability of the mind with instinctive information that comes from the gut. This allows us to adapt and self-regulate in ways that reptiles, for example, cannot do, being confined to instinct only.
This workshop seeks to integrate the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais – an early pioneer of neuroplasticity, who worked wonders on human health via the mind-body connection through the nervous system – with Dr Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal theory, on the vagus nerve connecting our higher and lower centers:the Neuroscience of Polarisation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmkG5l7CaGw) Additionally, Chinese medicine teaches that the tongue has an intimate connection with both the jaw and the heart.
To find practical applications for improving your health and strengthening your heart, your teacher Eva Geueke draws from her decades of experience as a Feldenkrais practitioner, as well as her extensive work in Mantac Chia’s Qigong practice and Emily Conrad’s Continuum practice.
Attendees will have access to a video recording session for a days after the workshop, at a modest price.

Enhance your lung health as you straighten your spine – it’s important for a healthy respiratory system. Eva will be offering live feedback to students during this interactive workshop.
This workshop will help your spine heal and/or stay healthy. If you have a twist in your spine (scoliosis) or suffer from roundback (kyphosis) this workshop can teach you how to lengthen your spine and undo curves that hinder free movement. Your neck, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae will benefit and feel more mobile yet stable. You may be able to reduce headaches with these movements.
Our ribcage and diaphragm often reflect our spine’s habit of shortening to one side or to the front. To make lasting change, we will address mobility of the ribs and learn to balance the intercostal muscles to be more functional in all directions. With a freer ribcage and spine, we breathe more easily!
You’ll take 2 lessons with a water break in between. We plan to record the lesson to make it available to workshop attendees for a small fee.

Awaken your heart and heal yourself by delving into the wisdom of “your inner biology”. Through breath, sound and movement, we invite our inner waters to penetrate and saturate all the different layers of ourselves: muscles, connective tissue, organs and cells.
Through spiral movement we unfold our spirit and coax the love that lies in the depth of our being to fill us and penetrate the field around us.
Learn to listen for your authentic body wisdom. The meeting of life – water and the spark of fire is the wonderful practice of creation and connection. We are all longing for this connection, and when we make it, our hearts open to deep joy. Then our love overflows into the great ocean of love.
Learning awareness of the body and the self translates into awareness of others and our surroundings. We gain the virtues of peace, self-love with compassion for others, and gentleness with strength.

Feldenkrais – Thursdays 9:30 – 10:45 am

Feeling tight in your neck, shoulders or back? This workshop can work wonders for you. Learn movements that will gently release your major tensions without a typical stretching or exercise routine. With Smart Moves you experience a big change in just 2 days, and what you learn will stay with you. Smart Moves Feldenkrais® is a system that uses the neuroplasticity of the brain to produce changes in the muscle tissue to be more efficiently organized. That means the body works better and permanent tension becomes unnecessary. You can do most of these movements while lying down, almost effortlessly. In fact, Eva will undoubtedly tell you to stop trying so hard! That’s part of the key to the Feldenkrais magic!

This event will gently guide participants to explore intuitive dance movement through physical contact with one another. This is a free flow dance form in which the point of contact with the other dancer/s provides the starting point for a movement exploration. Practice can include rolling, being upside down, following a physical point of contact and supporting and giving weight to a partner.
We spend 45 minutes in dancing free flow before we start with the Contact Improvisational instructions and jam. Contact Improvisation is profound yet lighthearted, sometimes acrobatic yet safe, simple yet bold, sincere yet playful. Contact Improv will add newness, inspiration and a somewhat meditative, loving state to your dancing self. Contact Improv is an evolving system of movement initiated in 1972 by American choreographers Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith. The improvised dance form is based on the communication between two moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion-gravity, momentum, inertia.
*Wear comfortable clothing: half-length or long sleeves and pants preferred.

Feldenkrais for Happy Feet
Happy feet are a pleasure to walk on. In this workshop, you will learn movements to make your feet stronger and more mobile while working on good posture at the same time. Having painful or deformed feet from misuse act as a drag on the body. Regaining flexible feet and ankles is of vital importance for balance. We can change our posture from the neck down and from the feet up.
4/3 4:30-6:15p
Feldenkrais for Happy Knees, Spinal Rotation & Side Bending
This workshop helps improve walking, hiking, running, dancing and even tennis and golfing! It is great for hula dancers! It will feel like a vacation for your bigger joints! Your ribs are the ‘bumpers’ for your knees. If the ribcage is stiff, there is little elasticity for your walk and little shock absorption for any unevenness of the ground. Help your thoracic spine to move in harmony with your legs and pelvis and do a counter-rotation for stabilization.
4/9 3-5.45 pm
Feldenkrais for Functional Hips, Flexible Pelvis & Strong Lower Back
Learn to make better use of the powerhouse of your locomotion: your hip-pelvis-lower back connection. The hip joints are part of the pelvis. The psoas muscle connects the legs to the lower back through the pelvis. Opening the hip flexors in this workshop increases healthy mobility and prevents hip damage. These Feldenkrais® movements enable you to sense the connection of your legs into your pelvis and torso so that all parts work together for powerful, flexible movement!
Eva Geueke is a Feldenkrais practitioner and teacher, as well as a Universal Tao instructor for Qigong, having studied under Mantak Chia. A professionally trained dancer and choreographer, Eva teaches Release Technique dancing, Contact Improvisation, and Feldenkrais Movement, a self-developed style linking Feldenkrais to dance. Eva is also a teacher of Capoeira, has taught yoga, and studied Continuum movement with its Conrad for more than a decade, from which Eva created Wave Continuum.
