Kinesiology being the study of the body’s movement, who better to learn from than a Physical Therapist who is also a yoga teacher?!? As yoga teachers, we each want to guide our students through their  asana  in the safest possible way. Our ethical and professional responsibility impels us to acquire the knowledge and deep understanding of how the machine we are guiding to move, actually moves. Without this knowledge, we are risking injury to students both physically and emotionally, with the consequent risks to our liability, career and conscience. This workshop will empower you to more thoroughly and precisely prepare your students for the postures you are suggesting they do, significantly increasing their safety in your classes.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • basic anatomy of the musculo-skeletal system
  • various arthro- and osteo-kinematic principles and how they apply to yoga asana
  • how to determine whether a student is hypermobile or hypomobile, via observation and quick assessment
  • proper, safe verbal and tactile cues using basic anatomic and kinematic principles
  • to perform safe, healing, hands-on assisting techniques for the hyper vs. hypo mobile student

In Lab, you will investigate and explore:

  • muscle and bone, palpable landmarks
  • bone and joint motion based on the concave-convex rule
  • lever systems of muscles, as used in yoga
  • ligamentous laxity concerns in various postures
  • the effects of various verbal and tactile cues

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • identify muscles and bones via observation, and tactile assessment
  • complete a written quiz to determine the arthro and osteo kinematic differences in your students by observation and conversation with a role playing student and the workshop’s instructor
  • identify hyper vs hypo mobility in a role playing student and determine if and what is causing faulty movement
  • demonstrate your knowledge of anatomic and kinematic principles in regards to individual poses and sequencing, via written quiz and practical scenarios
  • Instruct a short sequence to demonstrate your knowledge of anatomic and kinematic principles in cueing, assisting, and adjusting your students.

Christine Keller, holistic Physical Therapist

Taught by Dr. Christine Keller PT, DPT, CMPT, a physical therapist since 2010 and a yogi for almost two decades. Christine is a certified yoga teacher through Sarva Yoga Academy and an expert in her fields of orthopedic, manual physical therapy, dance medicine, women’s health and yoga. Christine is absolutely in awe of the human body’s structure and function. You could call her an anato-nerd!!! She definitely knows her stuff when it comes to how the body actually works, and what to do when it doesn’t. She is the owner of METAPHYSIO, and offers services in Hawaii and NYC.

Christine Keller received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University in 2010 and her Dual Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Dance from Hunter College in 2006.  Christine is an orthopedic, manual, physical therapist with a concentration in Dance Medicine and Women’s Health. During her last 7 years of practice she has had opportunities to excel in her concentration of Dance Medicine, yet her practice has expanded,  giving her opportunities to work with a very large range of cases. Her case-load includes those with Parkinson’s, orthopedic and surgical traumatic/acute injuries, chronic long-standing injuries and pain, dance specific injuries, and pre/peri and post-natal concerns.

As a manual, orthopedic physical therapist, most of the treatment is one on one, hands-on, yet very interactive.  There will be concentration on motor/muscle recruitment and control. Yoga poses and philosophies are often used to bridge the gap between mind and body in preparation for returning to your optimal performance. By blending numerous techniques, Christine has created an entirely specific, individualized system to diagnose and treat your unique self, shortening the amount of time you spend both in pain, and in the medical offices.
