Participation in this hulu halau (school) is one of the best introductions to Hawaiian language and culture. Children will learn both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula auwana (modern hula), with the basic steps as well as oli (Hawaiian chants). Children will learn a true appreciation for nature, as well as how to make flower lei. At least 3 performances will be scheduled, as well as a field trip to a heiau (ancient sacred Hawaiian site) Optional: Hiuwai sunrise ocean cleansing ceremony on Saturday, September 20 and December 20 with the adult hula halau – your whole family is welcome.

malia_beach-281x300Kumu Malia Helela is an authentic Kumu Hula: a recognized hula teacher, officially having graduated after 17 years training from the long and esteemed Hawaiian hula lineage of Pulu’elo Park. Conversant in Hawaiian, Kumu Mālia frequently composes her own original oli (sacred chants) and mele (songs) that celebrate Hawai’i’s natural beauty. In keeping with her tradition, she is an observant and reverent student of nature and keeper of the land – the ‘āina – helping with her family to maintain a heiau in Kailua.
