Great Aloha Run: Lonnie Hicks HandCycles for the Still & Moving Center Feb 20 2012

The Still & Moving Center would like to announce that we are sponsoring Lonnie Hicks to race his Hand Crank Wheelchair/HandCycle in the 2012 Great Aloha Run on Presidents Day, Monday, February 20. Go Lonnie!!!
The start time for wheelchairs and HandCycles is 6:53 am (this is 7 minutes before the official start time of 7:00am.) Lonnie will be wearing a custom made Still & Moving Center cycling outfit he and Renee designed. More information on the Great Aloha Run can be found at http://www.greataloharun.com

Lonnie Hicks is a 50 year old Disabled Veteran of the Army. He has had numerous knee operations which keep him from walking anything but short distances. He also has other disabilities as well. However Lonnie does not let his disabilities keep him from enjoying life to the fullest. He received his first HandCycle from the VA in 2009 and did the Great Aloha Run in 2010, he was unable to do it 2011. Lonnie has lost 50 pounds and 4 pant sizes since then. Last year Lonnie had a racing HandCycle donated to him by the Challenged Athletes Foundation and a private party. He race it in the 2011 Tin Man Triathlon as part of a relay team, a flat tire did not let him finish though.
Lonnie started coming to the Still & Moving Center when it opened. He has taken several different classes, but has found Tai Chi for better balance and Feldenkrais are perfect for him. Lonnie says “When I started Tai Chi, I would have told you it was impossible for me to balance on one leg. I do it all the time now!!! Tai Chi has also helped me to center myself, which really helps with my chronic pain. Jerry is a fantastic teacher!! Feldenkrais and Eve, have helped my body move in ways and places I thought would never move much again. I feel it mostly in my ribs, chest and lower back. After my bypass I lost a lot of movement in my chest and ribs. Now I can breath better and that helps tons in my HandCycling. The Still & Moving Center has bettered my life greatly and I love all the positive energy everyone there has. You can feel it before you open the door.”
Lonnie is also an award winning artist. He has won blue ribbons in each of the last 3 local Veterans Creative Art Contest and in 2010 he won a National Veterans Creative Arts Festival Gold Medal. He and his wife along with other Gold Medalist spent a week in La Crosse Wisconsin at the Festival. “I was so honored to be selected to represent the Honolulu V.A. and we were treated like Rock Stars!” Lonnie says.
